What is Google AI Mode and how to retrieve data from it

Google continues to integrate progressive AI features to improve users’ web search experience. In March 2025, the company introduced Google AI Mode, an independent AI-powered search engine where users can search for information through interactive AI dialogue.

Let’s explore Google AI Mode in detail and how you can fetch data from it using the DataForSEO API.

Explaining Google AI Mode

Google AI Mode is a separate search engine that allows users to perform AI-based searches. It is powered by a proprietary Google AI model, Gemini 2.5, that supports advanced reasoning and quoting relevant websites to generate responses.

In Google AI Mode, you can write a specific query and receive an AI-generated summary response. The response includes structured text summaries with links to quoted websites and, in some cases, featured images. Moreover, you get a separate list of references that contains links to all websites used to generate the response.

Example of Google AI Mode response:

AI mode AI SEO

After getting the response, you can use chat to ask follow-up questions or send a completely new search query. The Google AI Mode will generate a new response under the previous one.

Like with standard Google SERPs, it is possible to parse and retrieve the contents of Google AI Mode. To do that, we developed the DataForSEO Google AI Mode API, which easily gets all data from the Google AI Mode, including links to quoted websites.

Getting Google AI Mode data with DataForSEO Google AI Mode API

1. First, make a call to the Google AI Mode endpoint:

POST: https://api.dataforseo.com/v3/serp/google/ai_mode/live/advanced

2. In the keyword field, specify the search query. Note that the query must not exceed 700 characters.

3. Specify the location using location_name, location_code, or location_coordinate. To get a list of all available locations, call the Google SERP API Locations endpoint.

4. Using language_name or language_code, set the search engine language. Currently, the only supported language is English.

5. Use the device field to specify the type of device. You can select either a desktop or mobile device type.

6. Define the device operating system using the os field. For desktop device type, you can choose between windows or macos, and for mobile device, you can select android or ios.

7. If necessary, you can set the calculate_rectangles parameter to true to get pixel rank and snippet size of all Google AI Mode SERP elements. Besides, you can also define custom browser_screen_width, browser_screen_height, and browser_screen_resolution_ratio.

The request may be structured like this:

[
  {
    "language_name": "English",
    "location_name": "United States",
    "keyword": "Eiffel Tower",
    "device": "desktop",
    "os": "windows"
  }
]

The response will return as follows:

The ai_overview item in the items array of the response contains data from the Google AI Mode results page. To understand what data you receive, let’s look at the Google AI Mode SERP components and the corresponding data elements in the API response.

AI Mode 2

1. Text summary and featured images. The contents of the text summary and featured images are located in:

  • markdown field of the ai_overview item. The markdown field contains the whole summary text and links to all featured images formatted in the markdown markup language;
  • Separate ai_overview_element objects with text summary, divided into segments, quoted websites, and featured images info.

Each of the ai_overview_element objects includes:

  • text field that holds the part of the generated summary text;
  • title field with title of element of the summary (if available);
  • markdown field with the element content formatted in markdown format;
  • links array with links to featured websites and anchor text;
  • images array featuring alternative text, direct image links, and original source locations;
  • references array with additional details about the sources (posts, blog articles, or news pieces) used to generate the part of the summary. These details include the source name, domain, URL, and extracted text segments.

2. List of quoted sources. The detailed information about all the websites used to generate the Google AI Mode response is located in the references array of the ai_overview item. The references array consists of individual ai_overview_reference objects that include:

  • source field with the quoted website’s name;
  • domain field with the domain address of the website;
  • url and title of the quoted website;
  • text field containing the website text used to generate the response.

The price of using the Google AI Mode API endpoints is double the standard price of the Google Organic SERP API. For example, when using Google AI Mode API with the Live data retrieval method, you’ll pay $0.004 per SERP page instead of the standard $0.002. For more details, check the Pricing page.

As you can see, using the Google AI Mode API, you can pull all available data from the Google AI Mode, from the structured response text to detailed information on websites quoted. If you have any additional questions, reach out to our 24/7 customer support.
