Language & Translation in Tripadvisor Reviews API

Tripadvisor no longer automatically translates all reviews. Instead, only some reviews are translated based on its internal selection logic, while others may remain in the original language.

To align with this shift, we’ve updated our Tripadvisor Reviews API in the Business Data API suite to offer you better clarity and control over multilingual content.

What’s new

We’ve added two new fields that make language handling in review data fully transparent:

The language field added to the tripadvisor_review_search element and within its responses array shows the language of the review and response text as displayed on the platform (either original or translated).
The original_language field now available in the tripadvisor_review_search element indicates the language in which the review was originally written.

Things to note

The translate_reviews parameter in the Tripadvisor Reviews API remains true by default (enabled). This means reviews may be translated based on the domain specified in the url_path (e.g., .com English). However, Tripadvisor no longer guarantees that the translation will be applied to all reviews.

If you set the translate_reviews to false, reviews will not be translated at all, no matter what you specify in the location, language and url_path fields.

Why it matters

These changes are designed to help you:

➤ Clearly indicate both the original language and the displayed language of reviews.
➤ Detect whether a review was auto-translated or shown as-is.
➤ Provide better context and user experience.

See our updated API documentation for details.
