The DataForSEO plugin is an official Codex plugin that connects OpenAI’s coding agent to DataForSEO APIs through our remote MCP server. Once installed, Codex can browse the DataForSEO documentation, call our API endpoints, and pull live SEO and GEO data directly into its answers. You don’t have to make manual API calls or copy-paste data between the tools.

The plugin extends it into a full SEO research workstation: ask a question in plain language, and Codex fetches the data, analyses it, and builds the deliverable.

How to install the DataForSEO plugin in Codex

The whole Codex plugin install takes about two minutes – just one terminal command and a single approval click.

  1. Open the ChatGPT Desktop app, switch to Codex, and start a new chat.

  2. Click the Toggle side panel button in the upper right corner, then click Terminal. Paste the install command to add the DataForSEO plugin repository as a Codex plugin marketplace.

  3. Go to Plugins → Personal and click the + button next to the DataForSEO plugin. If it doesn’t appear, refresh the page.

  4. Approve the DataForSEO authentication flow. One click, no API logins or passwords to paste.

Using Codex CLI on the same device? DataForSEO plugin is available there too – ChatGPT Desktop and Codex CLI share installed plugins, so your Codex CLI install is ready the moment the desktop install finishes.

How does it work?

Codex plugins bundle capabilities into installable packages, including skills, tools, and MCP server connections. To achieve that, the DataForSEO plugin uses a connection to our remote MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets AI agents like Codex call external tools and data sources securely. That connection is what lets Codex fetch live DataForSEO data mid-task instead of guessing from memory.

Because the plugin rides on the MCP standard, you get the same data, the same endpoints, and the same billing as our direct API and MCP integrations – the plugin just removes the setup work.
